This publication is the first comic-book appearance of Casper, the Friendly Ghost. The character made his debut in the 1939 children’s book The Friendly Ghost, written by Seymour Reit and illustrated by Joe Oriolo. The book was the basis for a 1945 animated short film directed by Isadore Sparber for Paramount Pictures. After two additional films, the character was licensed to St. John Publications for the comic-book market. Harvey Comics took over the license in 1952, and bought the property outright in 1959.
