The Transformers was a tie-in series to the Hasbro toy line, which featured concepts licensed from the Japanese company Takara (now Takara Tomy). Hasbro employed Marvel to develop the various characters and provide them with a back-story. Most of the development work was done by Marvel editor Bob Budiansky. An animated TV series from Marvel Productions began airing in September of 1984. The comic book, originally intended as a four-issue limited series, was an enormous sales success. Demand was such that Marvel took the unusual step of publishing multiple printings of the individual issues. All four issues went to press at least three times. The title continued as an ongoing monthly series in 1985. The property is one of the most successful franchises in the history of pop culture.
