With this issue, Ka-Zar the Savage became the first ongoing series from a traditional newsstand comics publisher to be distributed exclusively to the “direct sales” comics-store market. It was one of three previously newsstand-distributed titles published by Marvel that were shifted to exclusive comics-store distribution in the fall of 1981. The other two were The Micronauts and Moon Knight. The comics-store market carried publications on a non-returnable basis, while newsstand distributors returned unsold copies for credit with the publisher. The three series, while low sellers overall, sold well enough with comics-store retailers to justify continued publication if they were distributed only in that marketplace. All three series were cancelled in 1984. The Micronauts and Moon Knight were relaunched with new newsstand-distributed series in, respectively, 1984 and 1985.
