Note

Crisis on Infinite Earths, a 12-issue limited series, was DC Comics’ first effort at a line-wide crossover storyline. It differed from Marvel Super Heroes Secret Wars, Marvel’s earlier project of this sort, in one major respect. Secret Wars, while its events impacted the connected company titles, did not demand to be read for readers to understand the storylines in those series going forward. Any changes to the various series were immediately understandable from context. As such, Secret Wars was an addendum project that readers of the connected series could comfortably ignore. Crisis, on the other hand, not only demanded that it be read in order to understand the various connected series, it demanded that all crossover issues with the multitude of outside titles be read as well. Readers were required to buy issues of titles they otherwise weren’t following to keep up with the story. This interconnected-storyline format became the norm for crossover-event series afterward. The format is controversial. While boosting short-term sales, it also alienates many readers in the long-term.
