Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter rejected Claremont and Byrne’s originally intended ending for “The Fate of the Phoenix!” after seeing the lettered pencil art. He felt the anti-climactic tone was insufficiently dramatic (in his words, “a cop-out”), and ordered the story reworked. Claremont and Byrne then came up with a new ending in which the Jean Grey character died. Byrne penciled new art for the final six pages, and Claremont rewrote the caption, thought-balloon, and dialogue copy for the entire story. Claremont and Byrne both consider, although grudgingly, the revised story superior to the original one. The revisions gained notoriety in the comic-book fan press, and in 1982, Fantagraphics Books (at the time, a fan-press boutique publisher) printed the unused pencil pages in the Marvel-authorized book The X-Men Companion, Volume One. In 1983, Marvel published the original version of the story in full in the newsstand-distributed Phoenix: The Untold Story #1.
