The G. I. Joe comic-book series was a tie-in for a revamp of the Hasbro toy line that was overseen by Marvel and primarily developed by Marvel editor, scriptwriter, and artist Larry Hama. In addition to the comics, Marvel Comics’ sister company Marvel Productions produced an animated television series for syndication. The comic-book series was one of Marvel’s biggest publishing successes in the 1980s. According to Jim Shooter, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief between 1978 and 1987, it became the company’s largest seller in mail subscriptions in 1985. Among color comics of the time, it was also quite likely one of top two selling continuing series from any publisher, and the number-one seller in the newsstand market.
