The magazine was intended as a platform for author-owned work by North American adventure-comics talent. It was conceived by Richard Marschall, Marvel editor-in-chief Jim Shooter, and Marvel president James Galton. The editorial format was modeled after Star*Reach, and the publication format was modeled after Heavy Metal. Archie Goodwin, who oversaw the published series of 34 issues between 1980 and 1985, came on board only after Marschall had left Marvel in late 1979. Marschall had planned and done the acquisitions work for much of the first year’s four issues, and his efforts were present throughout the second year’s issues as well.

Frank Frazetta later published the cover illustration as a poster titled “Seven Romans.”

This is the first book collection of Jim Davis’ Garfield daily-newspaper strip. The Garfield strip collections were among the biggest book-publishing successes of the 1980s. They were mainstays of the New York Times weekly bestseller list for trade-paperback books, with Garfield at Large holding the number-one spot for nearly two years.

Jim Davis did not like the mass-market paperback format for collecting daily newspaper strips, as it did not follow the horizontal layout of the daily-newspaper presentation. He insisted on a “landscape” format for his book collections, as it preserved the look of the strip as it appeared in newspapers. The success of Garfield at Large and its follow-up volumes led to variations of the “landscape” format becoming the norm for book collections of newspaper strips.
