Artist Dave Cockrum designed the character. She had appeared earlier in various disguises in Ms. Marvel #16 and 17. She is only referred to as Raven Darkhölme in these three issues; she will not be called Mystique until the "Days of Future Past!" story in The X-Men #141, published in 1980.
