This is the Warner Books edition of the book, and was marketed to bookstores. A DC Comics edition was distributed to comics stores. No copyright registration was filed for the DC edition, but according to anecdotal recollections and advertising, it was published in September. DC Comics took over bookstore distribution of the title in the 1990s.

Both editions feature new cover illustrations by Dave Gibbons. The cover of the original DC edition features a purple-hued shattered-window image.

Watchmen is reputed to be the most commercially successful English-language graphic novel, with over 4 million copies in print.

In 2005, Time magazine included Watchmen in its list of the 100 best English-language novels published between 1922 and 2005. It was the only comics work featured on the list. Click here.
