This was among the comics declared obscene in 1988 in the case of Illinois v. Correa. Unlike Weirdo #17, no story or stories were singled out by the prosecution at trial. The obscenity determination was overturned on appeal in 1989.

Notes

This is the Warner Books edition of the publication. It was distributed to the bookstore market. In October, DC Comics published an edition for distribution to the comic-store market. The editions are identical except for the front-cover illustration. The Warner edition used an original illustration. The DC edition used the cover illustration for Batman: The Dark Knight #1.

The book was a sales success, and is considered, along with Maus: A Survivor’s Tale, American Splendor, and Watchmen, one of the breakthrough graphic novels in the bookstore market. DC Comics took over bookstore distribution from Warner Books sometime in the 1990s. The book is a perennial seller, and remains in print to this day.
