This marked the beginning of adapting Robert E. Howard’s 1930s pulp-story characters to comics.

The comic may be the first instance of collectible speculators widely targeting a newly published comic book for hoarding and price-gouging as a back issue. The sales reports were so high that Marvel publisher Martin Goodman immediately changed the series’ publication schedule from bi-monthly to monthly. The monthly schedule began with the fourth issue. And like all speculation sales bubbles, the numbers steadily declined from their initial peak. The series faced cancellation during its second year, and was scaled back to bi-monthly publication. The comic-book Conan then began to properly build an audience, eventually moved back to monthly publication, and has been a mainstay of North American comic-book publishing ever since.
