Dave McKean’s covers for Hellblazer started a trend among horror-themed series at DC Comics. Painted and mixed-media illustrations, often of an expressionist bent, became standard for cover art. The new style in covers was effective in marketing these series to an older readership, and in the early 1990s those titles became the foundation for DC’s Vertigo imprint.
