This comic was successfully prosecuted for obscenity in the case of the People of New York v. Kirkpatrick. The focus of the prosecution was the R. Crumb story "Joe Blow," which depicted, with hardcore-pornographic visuals, family incest. The ruling was issued on October 28, 1970. It was upheld on appeal. The determination of obscenity was effectively vacated in 1973 with the U. S. Supreme Court ruling in Miller v. California, which established new legal guidelines for communities.
